Invited Session: Closing Dumpsites
Dumpsites Remediation Holistic Model (0.5 CEU)
Tuesday, September 26, 2017
16:15 – 16:45
Argentina is a Latin-American country with an area of 2,780,000 km2. It has the second largest territory in South America and Latin America. Dumpsites are not only a problem for Argentina, but for all Latin American countries. The need to protect the environment and the health of the population is of major importance. The solution would involve the gradual recomposition of the sites, while taking into account the political, social and cultural points of view. More than 2,160 cities from the 23 Argentinian Provinces have begun adopting strategies to manage urban solid waste (USW), although much of this waste is still not managed properly and ultimately ends up in open dumpsites. In the last few years however, local, provincial and national authorities have gradually introduced projects to achieve alternative ways of managing municipal waste, from the regionalization of sanitary landfills to developing environmental centers, among others. Impactos Ambientales and Arlanda Ambiental develop integral proposals to approach the dumpsites problem according to these strategic axes:
- Dumpsites remediation methodology
- Community relations plan
By attending this presentation, participants will better be able to achieve how to design, plan and develop a closing dumpsites project for Latin American and other developing countries. The goal of this presentation is to expose the work methodology and implement the effective execution of this kind of project in different local governments.
