Advancing Sustainable Waste and Biomass to Energy in Cuba

Cuba has a population of approximately 11 million, however there is no recycling at the source, only dumpsites. On the other hand, the economy is on a kick-start, and there are plenty of biomass resources (e.g., bagasse from sugar cane, marabou, etc.). The main resource of power is oil (52 percent imported from Venezuela and 48 percent low quality Cuban oil—according to CETER and Cuba Solar). A huge potential exists to develop waste-to-energy and biomass-to-energy projects, attracting worldwide investors in this infant Caribbean market. The main focus of the proposed session is to analyze the real business opportunities in order to increase the existing 3.5 percent of renewable energy sources to more than 25 percent (local government target). Finally, another important target is to analyze the establishment of a legal framework for such investments (e.g., financing mechanisms, international cooperation etc.). The participants will have the unique opportunity to understand the rules of the local market, meet local delegates (especially policy and decision makers from local governmental authorities) and create the optimal networking/B2B.

Following this presentation, participants will be able to… examine the business opportunities especially for U.S.-related companies, discuss success stories for the WtE and biomass market around the world, design the required framework for developing such projects in Cuba, evaluating the current situation and planning future actions, choosing the best available technologies on a case-by-case and city-by-city project


Efstratios Kalogirou, Dr., Chemical Engineer, Greece

Dr. Efstratios Kalogirou is the co-founder and first Chair of Waste to Energy Research & Technology Council/WTERT Greece (Synergia, www.wtert.gr) and also the first Vice-Chair of Global WTERT Council, (www.wtert.org). He is a permanent member of the ISWA Working Group on Energy Recovery (ISWA-WGER, www.iswa.org). He has graduated in Department of Chemical Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and has a Ph.D. at the National Technical University of Athens, School of Chemical Engineering. He is an international expert on Waste Management, specialized in state of the art Waste to Energy/WTE novel technologies. He is involved in many environmental projects worldwide (especially in WTE feasibility studies, preliminary studies, etc.). He is an author of many scientific and technical papers, especially in WTE and coordinates worldwide intensive courses/seminars on advancing state of the art sustainable waste management and waste to energy as a renewable energy source, in close cooperation with policy decision makers, local governmental authorities and local industries and universities. He is experienced in advancing sustainable waste management courses and projects in developing and transitional nations worldwide. He has integrated technical site visits of many worldwide WTE plants (in all continents around the globe) within the last 20 years, with simultaneous experience and expertise in conducting specific WTE pre-feasibility, preliminary technical economic studies and relevant business plans worldwide.

Antonios Sakalis holds a Bachelor’s degree in environmental science from the University of the Aegean (Greece) and a Master’s degree from the Department of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (Greece), in water resources science and technology. He participated in the 2014 ISWA Summer School though a Romanian Solid Waste Association Travel Grant. He also participated in a workshop on advancing state-of-the-art sustainable waste management in Southern Europe and Middle East held by the Earth Engineering Center, Columbia University, New York, USA. He has been an ISWA member since 2015 and participates internally in the ISWA Working Group on Energy Recovery (ISWA-WGER).

Dr. C. Maritza Mariño Cala is a professor in the Department of Manufacture and Materials in the faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in the University of Oriente in Santiago de Cuba. She is involved in integrated waste management in Santiago de Cuba, and she is responsible for establishing WTERT-Cuba, sister organization of the Global WTERT Council.
